turning on standby power and/or shutting down monitor

I can turn off my monitor if I do so in a near time period, ie 5 min. I am
not sure if I can also go on standby power in this short time period. If I
set the time for a longer period (1 hour) I can do neither. The screen saver
comes on, and at or near the end ot the time set, the screen saver goes off
and I go back to my regular desk top. This has just started recently.
Alwasy worked before with turning of the monitor after an hour and going on
standby after 1 1/2 hours. Any suggestions

this happens even after you shut down the computer and checking the settings
once you reboot?

Yes, and that did not help. I have done more checking, and it seems to have
to do with my screen saver. If I turn off the monitor before my screen saver
comes on it works. If I don't, my screen savers works for quite some time
and then goes back to the Desk top.
