how in windows 2000 do I go into the startup menu and
where to turn off those programs that come on
automatically running in the backround when I boot up
there's too manyprograms running and dragging my system
down.

download msconfig.exe from http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm
run it disable the tasks you don't want to run.
