Hi,

I'm having a problem when trying to shut down my laptop with Windows XP
Pro. I get an on-screen message that, "The Program Is Not Responding". I
then click on Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and there is no program running. I try
again, and get the same notice, so I click on "End Now" and the PC
finally shuts down.

It's a minor problem, but I'm wondering what causes this, and what can I
do to correct it.

Thanks.

Morton

Go to the next tab & look at all the "Processes" running.
Experiment with a dif one each time you shut down until you find the
culprit.
Some are essential for your comp to run so avoid them ofcourse.
I often find that one of the culprits is a driver for an Iomega Zip Drive.
Could be anyone of them.

Usually there this window has a reference to the specific program.
It is allmost certainly one of the background apps that auto start when you
boot your PC, often seen in the task bar. These apps are not visible via
ctrl/alt/del

Just an FYI, that is precisely why I was told in here, and by an MS tech in
India, and an HP tech to turn off System Restore, "its not needed all the
time...causes hang-up in shutting down..." So, like an obedient fool, I did.
Now that its back on my CPU is at least staying on, but there's still a
power problem somewhere.

Terrible advice, as you've found out. Be very careful whose advice you
believe, and any time it's someone you don't know, check and get independent
verification.

Hi Bruce,

I took your advice, and found that there are 50 processes running.
Rather than playing around with them 1 at a time, and perhaps deleting
something that my PC needs, I guess that I'll just keep on seeing the
on-screen message and then clicking on End Now.

Thanks again for your help.
