Is there a way to turn Windows XP-Pro off such that...
When you turn it back on...
The Applications you had running at turn-off come back on with the same
files open, etc?
Thanks for any help.

If your hardware supports it this can be achieved using a Power Management
option called Hibernation.
Hibernation will write the contents of your computer memory (i.e. everything
that is going on at the time) to a file on disk and shut down.
Subsequently it will read that file back into memory when you start your
computer, so your system looks exactly the way you 'left it' las time, apps
running and all.
Go into Control Panel, Power Options, and if there is a tab called
Hibernation you have hardware that supports it, select the tab and check the
box Enable Hibernation.
Next select the Advanced Tab and make your choices for what you want to
happen when you press the power button and (if applicable) the sleep button.
