Turn on desktop grid in windows 2000

I use windows 2000 (could not find the correct group - sorry!)
How do I turn on the snap-to-grid in windows 2000?

In Windows 2000, the option of "Align to grid" did not exist.
You have to align desktop icons to the 'grid' manually.
The "Align to Grid" feature was introduced in Windows XP.

You could 'auto arrange' - but that lines everything up on the left side...
