Is there anyway to turn off the pc with the mouse curser with fewer steps?
With XP it just took 3 clicks.

How many does it take with Vista?

It just takes two clicks with Vista.......one if you download a
gadget. None if you use ALT+f4 then ENTER. Or try pushing the power
button on your case (more then likely it will use the shutdown command)

If your power button in the START MENU is not set to SHUTDOWN you can
configure it in power options (look in left pane)

If you use the sidebar, there are several good shutdown apps.

You can crete your own shortcut, too, for "pinn to sart menu", or the Quick
Launch or Desktop.

Shutdown C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0
Restart C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 0

Vista takes only 2 clicks. I don't understand your question.

It actually takes two steps - unless you class hovering the mouse of the
arrow key at the end of the start menu to wait for the shutdown menu to
appear a step. If that is the case it is 3 steps. Start Menu - Hover over >
arrow - click shutdown.

You can cut it down to two by altering the power plan options to make the
power button on the start menu 'shutdown' instead of 'sleep'

1/ Open control panel
2/ Click power options
3/ In power options click the link marked 'change plan settings' under the
power plan you are using
4/ In the next window click the 'change advanced power settings link
5/ When the power options window opens scroll down the list until you come
to Power button and lids
6/ Click the + sign to expand the menu
7/ Click the + sign next to the start menu power button option. The setting
should read 'sleep'
8/ Click the arrow to the right of the sleep dialogue box and you should see
the option 'shut down'
9/ Select this shutdown option and then press OK
10/ Finally close all power option windows
11/ When you click Start>power button the PC should shut down
