turn off NK2?

Keith G Hicks

I want Outlook to still pull up suggestions from my address book as I type
but I do NOT want them to come from the NK2 file. It's too often incorrect.
For example, my sister's email address is (this is fictitious)
(e-mail address removed). I ALWAYS have to use CTRL+K to get it to
come up because it's never stored in the NK2 file the way I expect it to be.
Sometimes it has quotes around it (who came up with that dumb idea?) and
sometimes not and not sure exactly what happens but it's never right. So I'd
rather it autocomplete based on teh address book without my having to use
CTRL+K. How can this be done? (I use Ingressor to edit the NK2 file
sometimes but Outlook just overwrites things so why bother)

Thanks,

Keith

No, that is not possible in that way. Even when you disable the AutoSuggest
feature, you can still type the name though and when you start typing in the
message body, Outlook will resolve the address based on that name from your
Address Book and not from your nk2-file.

Outlook 2010 does away with the nk2-file and will suggest based on your
Contacts folder and a separate Suggested Contacts folder.

THanks for the info. And wow, good to know about 2010. 'Bout time that
happened. Too bad it took so long to figure out how much of a mess that idea
was!

One other question. Is there a featuere in 2003 to pull NK2 entries into
contacts?

Very cool. Thanks Diane.

No, but there are utilities you can use to extract them from the NK2.

Why not delete the entry you don't like and then when Outlook resolves the
address from your Contacts next time, the correct address will be put into the
NK2 file.

I used to do that until I found out it didn't really work. The problem goes
something like this. My sister and her husband have an email address of
(this is a fictional example) (e-mail address removed). I store that in my address
book as "Shirley & John Smith". My nephew stores it in his system as "Mom &
Dad" so when I get an email from him where he included his parents in the
"TO" and if I do a reply all then it changes it to the way my nephew has it.
I went through all this with some MVP once before and found that this is the
way the thing is set up. That no matter how you store it in the NK2 file it
can change on its own depending on how someone else sent it to you
(something like that).

I don't think it changes it. I think you get two distinct entries, one for
how you addressed the message and one how your nephew addressed it and to
which you replied, including the address as he specified it.

Yeah, you are probably right. And the thing with putting single quotes
around it is very very frustrating.

If you really want to kill it, make the NK2 file read only. Close
Outlook, rename or delete it, then start Outlook and the open New
Message, then cancel message, close Outlook and a new blank NK2 file
will be created, r-click on that file select properties, and set
Read-only. The file will remain blank, with no entries. File is found at

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Why not just disable autosuggestion?

But back to my original post....

The fact that Outlook doesn't autosuggest from the contact list is truly sad
and is the real issue here (or that the NK2 file is not set up to work well
at all [read as "the NK2 file is a real joke"]). Turning off the NK2 file
(making it read only or turning off autosuggest or wahtever) kills
autosuggest altogether (which I was not aware of when I posted the
original post). I'm glad to hear that Outlook 2010 will use the contact list
instead, eliminating the NK2 file debacle. They could have kept it simple
and elegant but it seems like somebody overcomplicated it.

You misunderstand. Outlook has 2 features: autocompletion and
autoresolution.
If you want names to be filled only from your contacts you would turn off
autocompletion and use autoresolution. If you're like most users, you would
prefer autocompletion. Learn the features. Use what you prefer.
Outlook 2010 will not use your Contacts for autocompletion. It will create
a separate cache. It just won't store them in a separate NK2 file.

That would achieve the same effect, I just got side tracked into
"killing"
the NK2 file. <grin>
