Turn off New Mail Notification?

G

Guest

Yet another new MS feature that doesn't have a readily
apparent off button . . .

I'm running Win XP , and while I have my Netscape e-mail
window logged on, I keep getting a little pop-up from the
notifications task bar when I get new e-mail. This is
strange because:

Netscape is set to NOT check for e-mail automatically, and
the New Mail Notification is set to "always hide".

So what program is taking the initiative to check for new
e-mail on my server without asking?

Jay,

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically. Generally, for newsgroup posts, the Services section is not necessary.

Added the following key, but it didn't have any effect:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\]
"MessageExpiryDays"=dword:00000000

So, here's the Startup info from Doug's Tracker:

You may have some other problems/opportunities.

Update your Anti Virus software and run a full system scan!!!

From http://www.reger24.de/prozesse/winampa.exe.php

[["Background task from Winamp which has two purposes :
on the one hand it provides the Winamp System Tray icon, and on the other it
maintains file associations so that other applications do not take over file
associations which Winamp normally handles. As a System Tray icon Winamp is
rarely used, most users use Winamp through double-clicking on an MP3 file
rather than through actually starting it through Start \ Programs.
Therefore, for most users there is no need for a Tray icon which just adds
to the clutter. More worryingly, in our experience WINAMPA seems to cause
unexplained crashes in Netscape and Internet Explorer, and a few other
programs. Disabling WINAMPA totally seemingly gets rid of the crashes.
Recommendation : Disable Winamp Agent in Winamp itself. Click on the top
left corner of Winamp, then choose ""Options \ Preferences"", then ""Setup \
Agent"" in the left bar, then take the tick OFF ""Enable Winamp Agent"" and
all sub-options on the right-hand side. Click CLOSE. Close Winamp. Reboot

Updated and run, no viruses.

Believe it or not, I actually use the calculator. Easier
than using Excel everytime I want to multiply a couple of
numbers.

This for LabVIEW - control systems software that I use at
work. Same with all the other ni stuff.
I don't know what niSvcLoc.exe is!!

nipalsm.exe doesn't look good either and you have two of
them running.

Maybe my Norton Antivirus is popping up the window . . . it
uses the same space to show me it's scanning outgoing
messages. I think it would wait until I actually
downloaded my e-mail before scanning it though, and I don't
know why it would check for e-mail on my server for me.
So, still no answers.

Jay,

I use the Calculator also, but I close it when not in use.

If you use Outlook Express for Mail, turn *off* the E-mail scanning. It
does no extra good and may cause harm.

As for your original question, I've no idea. ;-(

I searched the registry, I found this little nugget:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\AppEvents\EventLabels\MailBeep

The data of which says "New Mail Notification", and there's
another one under CURRENT_USER . . .

So, I exported them and then deleted them from the
registry. I think this is working, although the
notification doesn't come up when you'd expect, so really I
can only prove that the nofication is on, not off.

I'll see if it pops up again today, otherwise, I'll assume
I fixed it.
