Turn off calculating word count status bottom of screen

How to disable the calculating word count status (green lights at
bottom/left). Even after hitting ESC to cancel, process is continually
calculating. Using Word 2003 SP3

There is no word count in the status bar of Word 2003 unless you added a
macro to provide one e.g.
