Turbo Navigator vs. Free Commander (explorer replacements)

A few downsides to TN.

(1) abandonware :(
(2) doesn't properly handle files >4GB. Bad news if you deal with video.

Yes, sadly. And I do video. :-(
(3) performance sometimes really got bogged down. Not sure what was causing
that.

(4) In v 1.47 the filters are a bit dodgy. You can set them, but cannot
select them unless you make one of them a "quick filter" for the time
being.

I still use it though, it is better than anything I have tried.

No, just the 'Turbo NaviGATOR' string which is picked up as Gator for
some reason.

Interesting. I'll have to give it another try. I recall the debate as
to whether v1.47 should be recommended by PL, but it's been awhile and
I don't recall the specifics. I think it was AdAware that discovered
the string.

I found this quoted by Susan in a more recent thread:

"There is also a bug - saved this quote from the author's site:

There is a bug in v1.47 that prevents it to work correctly under Win9x
and WinME systems. It is due to some features designed exclusively for
NT platform (WinNT 4.0, Win2000, WinXP...) and on these systems TN
works without any problems. I'm working on the fix for the bug but in
mean time please use older version of Turbo Navigator if you are
running Win9x operating system. Both versions can be found on download
page. I am sorry for inconvenience.
</q>"

I also see that you pointed out the same thing in Dec. 2003. I guess
we really should come to a conclusion about v1.47, so that I don't
keep repeating this <G>.

I imagine this bug still exists, as the author stopped development
about this time. If the GATOR string is a misinterpretation then maybe
it should be reconsidered.

The free/lite version also have scrap panes disabled and that means
it doesn't have a built-in 'find' function, you must use the one
provided by your OS.

Regards

this is indeed so but i've added a registry option so that
people with alternative shells (and not only) can associate
their find tool of choice with x2's Ctrl+F, e.g. agent ransak

you'll be able to try this yourself very soon
public betas of the "lite" version will start flying anytime!

This differs from the "Thumb bar" available in the present
2xExplorer?

I think "thumb bar" in 2x is now the "Quick View" feature in xplorer2. You
can view one file at a time in a pane.

Thumbnail view in xplorer2 is similar to the Thumbnail view in Windows
Explorer. In other words, you can see multiple thumbnail images in one of
the xplorer2 panes. You can choose the following views - large icons, small
icons, list, details, or thumbnail. Xplorer2 doesn't use the thumbs.db file
generated by Windows; it has to generate its own thumbnails on the fly, but
you can make them any size you want.

Another little-known dual panel opus was called
Magic Basket ... freeware up to version 1.1, then
it was apparently abandoned as a project. Magic
Basket was an adjunct to your Windows Explorer,
placing an option to open a second window of
Explorer. Of course, you could always open two
instances of Explorer and jockey them into side by side
positions, but Magic Basket installed as an option in
Windows Explorer to do this for you.

It still can be found at:

You have a good memory (or a good habit of searching). ;-)

I am *very* particular what I use and run a firewall all the time and
have yet to come up with TN doing any "phone home" whatsoever. If it
did, I'd drop it like a hot potato, believe me. If only the filters
worked properly in 1.47. :-(

Still, it's the best I have used, filters or no filters. I can't exactly
remember why I didn't revert to 1.46 as I have both archived on a CD.

I think that I can verify Mike's experience for TurboNavigator v1.47.

I reinstalled it and reinstalled AdAware and it shows nothing about TN
containing the gator registry entry. I ran the old Spybot on it and
installed the new Spybot and both show me clean. I've seen no attempts
to connect out in Kerio 2.1.5.

I agree that it looks like an earlier version of AdAware
misinterptetted naviGATOR as a gator entry. It looks to be fixed in
the current AdAware version.

Susan, I have added TurboNavigator v1.47 back if you care to add it
back to the PL list. It looks like the gator thing was a mistake:

Thanks REM. I appreciate you and Mike getting the Gator thing sorted
out. I'll revise the notes on the acf program info page. (TurboNavigator
was PW2003 - didn't make it this year.) I took a look at your web page -
a couple of comments:

v 1.46 is good for all OS - not just 9x/ME

Here is the author's note about the bug in v. 1.47 (copied from his web
page) - you might want to add it to your description:

I was thinking about that. I'll correct it.

Another freebie (long bit the dust) is Servant Salamander v1.52
(the last freeware) is available from:

http://www.altap.cz/ftp/salamand/salam152.zip

It had dual windows, but does not provide a tree-view like
TurboNav. Still, it is verrrry small.

The last version of Salamander I installed [v165b6] added 135
reg keys and 748 values under those keys. Maybe v 1.52 has fewer
entries. Unfortunately, there is no way to know about this until
after it is installed.

File Ant is even worse. It has 1222 total reg entries.

2xExplorer has a more reasonable 208 reg entries. Some FM's
use ini files, which have no impact of the registry.

'Hidden information' for what it is worth to anyone.

I loved TN. But I've been using 2xExplorer and now xplorer2 (replacement
for 2xExplorer) for a long time now. I have a few gripes, but I think it's
got everything else beat by miles. Still, I like to keep an eye on
competitors.

Powerdesk really gripes me - the freeware version won't show graphic
thumbnails or graphic previews! Pretty chintzy.

As for JExplorer - I think that's abandonware too.

Another one to keep an eye on - www.explorerxp.com

I located a few older turbo navigators and placed them at
http://www.freewareoffice.com/
tn122.zip   Version 1.22b (build 4.161). 498 kb
tn-ver1.22b-Build-4.226.exe
tnsetup140.exe   Version 1.40 setup.exe. 770kb
turbonavigator140.zip    Version 1.40 In a zip. 742kb
tn145setup.exe   Version 1.45. 842kb
tn146setup.exe   Version-1.46. 869kb
Turbo Navigator 1.47 952kb
for those that are interested. It will be listed on the latest tab or
under
Utilities --> File/ disk tools
