What exactly are you trying to do, or what exactly
have you done so far? How does Win98 come into
this?

This error message also occurs when more than one drive is configured as the
master on the same IDE channel!

Read here: " 'NTLDR is missing' error message when you install or upgrade
Windows XP over Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition"

If you are simply seeking a copy of 98 or 98SE, I'm sure you'd find
either/both on Amazon.com or eBay.com

I recently purchased Win XP Pro on eBay, and I've since seen 98 and
98SE there.

You can also buy XP Pro or XP Home on eBay or Amazon.com

I have tried on several occasions to install Windows XP Pro and it
failed, typically on older machines.

In each instance, I got the NTLDR error. When I started with
installing 98 FIRST, I didn't get the error.

98 evidently puts something on the hdd that Windows recognizes as
"NTLDR". I don't know what's going on beyond that, but it's my
philosophy that... "Hey, if it works!"

it works.
