Trying to solve a download issue in IE6

Dudley Henriques

I'd greatly appreciate it if someone more familiar with the inner
workings of IE would take a look at this and help me understand things a
bit better please.
I'm having problems downloading a 49 meg file with an XP dialup
connection to Earthlink that keeps giving me a server cutoff at 21megs
each time I try and download it .
Assume I can't use a download manager for this file please.

What I need to know , assumes no issues with either Earthlink or the
server that has the download. I've checked both out and you can assume
for the purpose of my post and question here that both are functioning
ok and are not the cause of my cutoff at 21 megs. I'm trying to either
confirm or eliminate my TIF cache as the cause.
In IE/Tools/Internet Options/TIF/settings; I'm showing a cache number of
2384megs.(I'm assuming this means bytes).
When I tried to download the 49meg file, I had forgotten to clear out
the TIF folder and it had 45megs of files in it at the time of the
download. I'm thinking the vendor is correct but I need to understand
the situation a bit more clearly if possible.
The vendor with the file tells me that clearing out the TIF will allow
the download and that this is what is causing the cutoff at 21megs.
I'm trying to understand how the existing cache number of 2384 showing
for TIF and the cutoff at 21megs correlates.
Also, should I raise this figure in the TIF settings to a higher number
and will clearing out the TIF solve this issue if I don't raise the
number in settings?
I just need a clearer picture on how all this fits together to allow
that 49meg download.
Many thanks for any and all comment on this problem.BTW, just be advised
that I'm not all that computer literate (if you haven't guessed that
already :)

When deleting TIF, always accept the prompt to delete all offline content,
Dudley. OE creates a zero-byte file of this type for every message opened,
every time it's opened. For heavy users of OE, this can really add up over
time.

FWIW I've never set my cache limit above 100.

You have my deepest sympathies trying to download a 49MB file over dial-up,
my friend.

Hi,
If your TIF folder is set to 2384 MB, that's 2384 MegaBytes- not 2684 bytes.
That should be plenty of room. But, you might try clearing the TIF, then
setting it's size to about 500 MB. Then try the download again.

If you had 45 MB in a TIF folder of 2384 MB, you had plenty of room, but an
empty TIF folder may make a difference.

Thanks to both you and the bear for your interest. I'm trying it again
tonight. With my dial up, I'll post back again in 2050 and let you guys
know how it went :))

Thanks bear. I'll try it again and see what happens. I've emptied the
cache and the offline content. Let's see how it goes this time.
