trying to repair...

Hi there,

I have a system that malfunctioned and it came up with the error message
"Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" so I renamed System to System.bak and
copied the Repair\system and now it will boot to the XP black menu where it
says "normal, Safe Mode, etc" so when I continue with any of these options
it goes for awhile then recycles back to the bios and starts again.

Then I tried doing a repair by booting with the XP CD and when it searches
for "previous Windows installation" it can not find it and just gives me
the option to install on the NTFS partition and if I hit OK, then it will
warn me there's an existing Windows folder on that partition. I stopped
there and exited.

What I need to do is have the repair find the existing Windows installation
and repair it from there.... Is there any way to be able to do this?

Thanks,

Gordon

Hello Gordon,

Looks like you shortcutted the process. Follow these (rather
complicated) instructions:

You need to go through the complete repair process for this error, not
replace just a single hive. Claymore gave you a link to the article that
has the info on how to resolve this issue.

As to your other question, there is no way to force the windows installer to
see an installation to do a repair. Either it sees it or it doesn't.
