Trying to network a 'mixed bag' of pc's at home.

My main PC (XP Home with wireless and Bluetooth) is cable connected to a
NetGear ADSL, (modem/router with wireless).
Next to it I have my old PC (Celeron running W2k and a network card) which
is cable connected to the router.
In addition the wife has a laptop which has wireless capability.

In my attempts so far, I have had each either access the web or another PC
but not been able to get either one PC to contact both of the other PC's or
ALL of them talk to each other and also access the Web.

Thanks for any assistance, Peter S.

we need to know the configuration first.posting the results of ipconfig /all here may help.

Robert.
I tried that command in 'Run' but it just flashed briefly on the screen and then gone.

you need to either find the command icon in accessories or else use start
run and type the letters CMD in the run box and then type ipconfig /all in
the command window that opens up....

If you are familiar with the network card properties pages look at the
properties for the TCP/IP protocol listed there and if they are not set on
"Automatic" your IP address will be there too... If they are set on
automatic then it will be up to the router to allocate an IP for each
machine and this is the easiest way for you to go and probably what Bob was
leading up to asking...

Good luck, just chipped in to answer your flashing command problem

Thankyou Charlie.
With your input I can now get the info but is there a way to save, copy or
print the information? DOS is a while ago for me :-( not that I was that
expert at it.
Cheers Peter S.

I tried that command in 'Run' but it just flashed briefly on the screen and then gone.

Type this into the RUN box...

CMD /K IPCONFIG /ALL

The /K parameter will force the command window to stay open, and you will be
able to see the IPCONFIG results. This is quicker than opening a command
window and then typing IPCONFIG.

Right click in the window, select mark and drag the mouse while holding the
left button (as you would to hilight in a word processor). When the text you
want is highlighted, right click again, which will copy to the clipboard.
Then open notepad and paste, or just paste directly into your reply. Also,
please tell us how yo have the systems connected, or better, make sure all
computers are plugged into one of the LAN ports on the router or connected
wirelessely. (I know this seems obvious, but you'd be surprised). Then, from
the command line on each computer, run the command "ipconfig /all". You may
need to scroll back some to get everything. Post the results.

A couple of hints, all three will need "client for microsoft networks" and
"file and print sharing" enabled. When sharing on XP Home, you will have the
opportunity to select "Just Share It" (or something like that), which will
enable the "guest" account. Do it. You can always turn it off later, but
removing obstacles will get you up sooner. On the W2K, you'll need to enable
the guest account manually from control panel -> computer management ->
local users and computers -> users, right-click the guest account and select
enable. If you will be using any of these computers on another network
(particularly on a wireless or other public network) DO NOT enable the guest
account.
