my computer was having problems so i decided to install a brand new 160GB
drive and brand new windows XP disc. I even bought a new Cd-Rom drive. As I
try to format the new drive, the computer keeps shutting off unexpectedly in
the process. I am pretty sure I've narrowed the problem down to a hardware
issue. Could it be the power supply, motherboard, or RAM? Does anyone know
where i should go from here? thanks.

I would start by measuring the power supply voltages.
