trying to install XP, curently having 98

I've came to the point where I'm installing xp and I get to a screen that
tells me I'm trying to install XP on a partition that already contains
another operating system. I don't want to have both systems. Can I delete
98 some how or is there a way to upgrade the 98 to XP.

recently updated win98's to xp here, booted up from CD and one of the
choices it offers was to format quick or format full and install new.

Look at the format command. Use a boot floopy disk- www.bootdisk.com has
some for download if you don't know how to make one.

What kind of XP CD are you trying to install XP with? Retail & generic
OEM CDs offer the choice of deleting and reformatting existing
partitions, basically wiping out whatever exists (W98 in your case) and
installing XP from scratch. I honestly don't know what an upgrade XP CD
would offer because I would never do that. But I suspect from what I've
read here that it could delete and reformat partitions as well. If you
are not offered that option we don't know what to tell you because you
tell us nothing.

I have created a bootdisk, I had to update my BIOS so I made one for that.
But it seem that I need to keep it out at this point when I turn on the
computer. otherwise it doesn't continue on. When you say "look at the
format command" I'm not quite sure what your refering to. From the screen
I'm currently looking at or somewhere else?

When you have booted using the floppy disk use the format command. If your
disk if ntfs formatted you need a boot disk for that or you cant see the
partition. bootdisk.com has boot floppies.
Your original real MS full install CD will boot the PC, just make sure you
set the boot order in the BIOS so it looks at the CD before the hard disk.
To use a boot floppy do the same, before the hard drive. The CD boot is
probably easiest. As it happens I was at my brothers yeaterday and I did
this on his friends machine.

To install XP, you boot from the XP CD.. there is no requirement to first
format the hard drive..

Running the XP CD within Win 98 will present you with four options.. choose
#4 to determine what if anything will be compatible with XP.. print out the
results and obtain whatever you need to get over compatibility issues..
modem drivers are generally required..

Got everything you need on CD?.. now boot from the XP CD.. if you have a
retail upgrade or retail FULL version of XP, you will be asked if you want
to upgrade or do fresh clean install.. follow the instructions to do
whichever is best for you.. an OEM XP CD allows only the option to clean
install..

If you do not understand the instructions given to you on screen, use the
services of somebody who does..
