Trying to connect my main PC to a laptop.

I purchased an Ethernet Cable so that I could connect the two machines
together. However, when I checked, only the laptop has a socket for the cable
to fit into. I have no idea what to do next. I've checked various websites
and looked through all the questions on this group. To be honest, I don't
know what I'm doing and so any help would be appreciated.

I am running windows XP on both machines although the network wizard on the
laptop has different options to the one on the main machine. Both machines
are less than 12 months old.

Aurora,

If either computer truly lacks an Ethernet connection, the simplest thing to do
is bite the bullet and buy an Ethernet card for it. You can get one in any
store that sells computer parts - for under $20.

What make and model is this deficient computer? I doubt that very many made in
the last 12 months are being sold in such condition - Ethernet networking is
just about standard.

BTW, the cable you purchased is a cross-over cable, right? If not, you'll need
an additional identical cable, and a hub.

Here are a couple websites with good tutorials on networking your computer:
