Trying to connect a Windows XP to a Windows ME to transfer data

I've purchased a new Windows Media Center which runs Windows XP. I have an
old computer that runs Windows ME. I was told that I could buy a
Crossover/Patch Cable to connect the two to transfer all my data to my new
machine. I've bought the cable, but when I connect the two, I have to be
disconnected from the internet. When I'm connected like this, I tried the
Wizard thingy and something's just not right. I was told that this would be
simple. Alas, it is not. Please HELP!!!

Yeah, if you normally connect to the Internet using your ethernet card, and
you have only one. This doesn't matter as what you need is temporary, so you
can transfer data.

connected like this, I tried the Wizard thingy and something's just

Set IP addresses on each that are in the same range/subnet....

ME: 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
XP: 192.168.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0

and make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup.
(eg).

Then see if you can ping by IP address.. Disable any firewalls in use on the
ME computer. If you get replies, you're getting closer. Wait a bit, then try
to ping the ME computer by *name* from the XP box.

Share the folder or entire C drive (etc) on the ME PC and see if you can
connect using the XP box; for example in a command line

net use x: \\winMEcomputer\share

Oh gosh, you sound like you know exactly what your talking about, but
unfortunately... I don't. I'm sorry. To begin with, where would I find this
"IP address" (I dont know what that is), how do I "ping" an address (dont
know what that is either), and how would I disable my firewall (I do know I
have one, just dont know where to find it). I'm not very computer literate.
I've already been to www.wown.com and printed out that information but I was
as confused there as here. I'm so sorry for being computer ignorant. Should
I just pay someone to come do this for me? Thank you very much for taking

Hi - no need to apologize. If you aren't sure how to do this, don't feel
comfortable trying it, don't want to do a lot of research to educate
yourself, and the website isn't helping, it may be a lot faster for you to
find a very tech-savvy friend or pay someone else to do this for you.

You should put a second NIC (ethernet card) on each pc
or
by using a small switch (4 ports is enought)

ME >>> Switch
MC >>> Switch
Switch >>> internet service providor
