Trying to connect a Spanish Vista machine to an XP network

This one's proving to be a nightmare.

A colleague who isn't desperately computer literate has a Spanish friend
staying who wants to plug her laptop into my friend's router (wired, not
wireless), but needless to say he doesn't know either Vista or Spanish!

Can anyone suggest a fairly simple walkthrough for connecting a Vista
machine to a router that we can try to translate on the fly?
