I have tried but it goes back to $ signs

In EXCEL 2007 this should work:-

Click in cell A1, for example, which is formatted as dollars.

Then Home / Font / Number tab / change the Symbol: to the pounds sign and
hit OK.

Cell A1 should now show pounds instead of dollars.

Try saving the file and going back into it to see if EXCEL has saved the
change: it should have.

Please hit Yes if my comments have helped.

Thanks.

You must change the formatting on the original Template and save that
Template, not on the workbook that was created by the Template.

To open the Template as a Template, not as a new workbook, you must browse
to the *.xlt or *.xltx file and right-click>open.

Make your changes and Save.
