Jason

I have an unusual problem for which I have not found any previous reference
to in the posts in this, or any other newsgroup.

My screen resolution is set to 1024x768. All pages and font sizes,
everywhere, throughout the interface and accessed by IE, appear in a normal
font
size, with the exception of the Windows Update page, whether accessed
through the
All Programs menu shortcut, or accessed directly through the address bar of
IE.

Looking at the Windows Update page -

at the top right corner of the page, the MS.com Home and Site Map headers,
the search box and Go button, are normal in font size.

at the upper left corner of the page, the MS and MS Update headers are a
normal font size.

The Welcome to MS Updates header to the center of the page appears in a
normal font
size.

All of the Options links on the left center of the page all appear in a font
size
that is barely readable.

in the center of the page, the Express and Custom buttons are a normal font
size, but the words to the top, to the right, and to the bottom of them
appear in a font size that is barely readable. Clicking on the both of these
buttons open to pages whose fonts size is barely readable.

The panels on the right center of the page, the Auto Update status and the
News, both appear in a font size that is barely readable.

on the bottom left of the page, the headings for the Update Privacy Policy
Statement link, the Terms of Use link, and the Privacy Statement link, all
appear in a normal font size.

When clicking on the Update Privacy Policy Statement link, it
opens to an entire page whose font is so small as to be barely readable.

Oddly, clicking on the links for the Terms of Use, and the Privacy
Statement, both open to pages whose font size is normal.

When trying to check for an update, the resulting list comes out in a tiny
font size, barely readable.
When I attempt to install an update, the installation progress window opens
to a normal size,
but after it closes, the page showing that the update was made is in a font
so tiny as to be barely readable.

I have tried changing the resolution on the entire computer in Desktop
settings to a lower resolution to see if this helps, as well as trying to
force the web
page to use a different font size through IE tools, but while all other
pages,
throughout the interface and on every webpage accessed by IE, are
uniformally changed to
reflect the new resolution, the MS Update page is still affected with a
tiny, barely readable,
font size, with the noted exceptions.

This problem started a few weeks ago for no apparent reason. Scans for
viruses, spy/ad-ware, or malicious cookies, show nothing unusual. Flushing
the cookie and temp file
directories and loading new ones doesn't help. It's just this one page that
is affected.

Again, I have found no reference in the posts in this, or any other
newsgroup of a similar problem.

Enough of a challenge for you?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just stop going to Windows Update. But you have been told this already.

Kurt,

When I get a letter from Bill Gates and/or God that tells me that I never
need to access Windows Update, I'll stop doing so.

And no, I'm not switching to Linux.

Thanks anyways.

Take care.

The contents of your DataStore folder may be the problem.

1. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder.
2. Click Start.
3. Choose Run.
4. In the Run box, type: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
5. Click OK.
6. Open the DataStore folder.
7. Delete all contents of the DataStore folder.
8. Close the window.
9. Reboot and revisit the Windows Update web site.

I'm better than any god, as at least I'm willing to answer when
questioned, and I'm telling you, you never need to go to Windows Update
ever again.

Carey, I tried your suggestion but ran into a snag.

Everything deleted except:

- a text file called ReportingEvents in the root directory

-The following 2 bin files in the EventCache folder
{CFACC0BC-0FC2-4C6F-A6E0-ADF5ABB5CB5D} and
{AB38C49B-92A5-4FB1-BA9A-62433AFEEF16}

- and a file named datastore.ebd in the DataStore folder
and the following files - ebd, ebdtmp, and tmp.edb - in the Logs
subdirectory of the DataStore folder.

When I try to delete these files I get an error message" cannot delete. it
is being used by another person or program. close any program that might be
using the file and try again.

I shut down the only other programs running: McAfee anti-virus and IE. That
got me the same error messages.

To see if I had deleted enough to make a difference, I rebooted and then
went to the Update page. No change in font size, no matter how I try to
access it.

At this point I have again deleted everything you suggested, with the above
named exceptions, and am waiting before rebooting..

What next?

Thanks for the help, Carey.

Change your screen resolution to 800 x 600. XP works better with
it anyway.

Why do you want to buck the system? Obey...or die.

Changing the resolution to 800 x 600 didn't fix the problem.

The parts of the page that appeared in normal font size before still do. The
rest of the page, however, still appears in a font so small as to be barely
readable.

Do we have another contestant in "Stump the Newsgroup?"

The page uses javascript.

The page uses javascript.
I first checked the setting in IE and under the Advanced tab I found a
section for Java.
There was a checkmark next to "Use JRE 1.5.0_6 for <applet>. requires restart"
If my memory is correct, there has always been a check mark here.

The next section, "Microsoft VM," showed a check mark next to "Java console
enabled"
This also has always had a checkmark.

To make sure I had the latest version of JRE I went to Java.com and downloaded
Java Enviroment version 5.0 Update 6.

After it installed itself, I went to www.pocoso.de/pocoso052.html and
insured that Java was working and that my browser was configured correctly to
use Java.

I also downloaded the most recent version of Microsoft VM, which, it turns
out, I already had installed.

After each time I rebooted, I went directly to the Update page.

No change. The page(s) still show a font so small as to be almost unreadable.

If you can suggest anything else related to Java that I should do, I'd
appreciate the input.

Thanks for the response.

Anyone else want to take a shot at solving this puzzle?

Jason: While on the site, hold down the 'control key' as you
roll your mouse wheel up or down. The font size should change.

Doug,

You're the winner of "Stump the Newsgroup!!"

Your suggestion fixed the problem. While the top and bottom headers are a
bit oversized, the problem areas are now readable.

Thanks very much!!
