trust via kerb realm but not win domain

Hi,

I have two win2k3 servers in different forests. I tried to establish a
trust between the two but, i kept getting this error.

"The local security authority is unable to obtain an RPC
connection to the Domain controller dc1.example.com. Please check that the
name can be resolved and that the server is
available. "

So the name of the domain controller resolves,dc1, and i know that the RPC
service is running on the servers. I then tried to create the trust as a
Kerberos domain. this worked! I'm not an expert in AD, can anyone tell me
why I couldn't add the trust as a Windows domain and could as a kerberos
realm trust?
