Trust Relationships with single label DNS name

I am having a problem creating a trust relationship between a Windows 2003
domain and a Windows 2000 domain. The Windows 20003 domain is a child domain
of a existing forest, the Win2000 domain is a single domian in it's own
forest. Both domains are running in mixed mode.

The Windows 2003 domain FQDN is MyCompany.ParentCompany.com, whereas the
FQDN for the Windows 2000 domain is just a single name like a NetBIOS name
(e.g. Domain2). Both domains have DNS forwarders setup and I can resolve
names correctly with DNS from both domains without problems.

Is it possible to create a trust relationship here ? I want the Windows2000
domain (Domain2) to trust the Windows2003 domain
(MyCompany.ParentCompany.com). I tried creating the trust from Windows 2003
first and I get the immediate reply back saying that the domain cannot be
contacted. Should I start here first or do the Windows 2000 domain first ?
