Truly Basic BackUp Question

Hello. I have a Dell Dimension XPS with XP Professional v 5.1.2600. I keep
reading that I should back up my system, but I don't think its ever been
done. Some other posts I read recommended buying Acronis or other non-MS
backup software. What I'm wondering is: if I do that, will I be able to use
the CD or DVD burner stuff to store the backups on?
I have not burned any CDs (perhaps you can tell) but I'm willing to give it
a try. I just don't want to buy back-up software and then have to buy an
external hard drive. I have a second computer that sounds like it's trying
to die, and I hope to get it backed up before it does. It's only 2 years old
at the most (!)
Thank you for your help and patience.

You certainly can. I recommend CDs as they're easier though a partition is
not bad either. External is always better though.
