True PNG support in Internet Explorer

I was wondering for how long we will have to wait for PNG
to be fully supported in the worlds most widely used
browser, Internet Explorer.

Everybody else has gotten PNG alpha-channel (degrees of
transpancy) support down for ages, but still IE seems to
lack behind.

It is highly annoying having to use filters or similar to
archive any sort of transparency, or even worse, having to
use GIF with only 256 colors including one used as
background color.

Microsoft has asserted that it is incapable of improving IE with current
versions of Windows. And the next version of Windows is not expected to
appear until 2005 or 2006.
