I am a technophobe who uses the computer only occasionally. I keep getting
Trojans and viruses when I use the Internet. When I boot the PC it now asks
me for a password (it never did before) and I don't know it. I tried putting
in the Windows XP CD and pressing F8, but now it just shows error message
[07185] "system disabled".
Any help you could give would be very much appreciated.

If you are a technophobe this may be dificult.
Do you have any data ie documents etc on the PC that you cannot afford to
lose?

DL - No, only some word documents I have saved or printed off. There is
nothing else I would be bothered to lose.

It sounds like the only practical answer for you, since you aren't worried
about data on the hard drive, is to do another install of windows from your
installation or Restore CD/CDs.
If you need help with that, come back and describe your computer and the
CDs that came with it.

Otherwise I think a visit to the repair shop would be in order.

I concur.
Re Virus / Trojans / Malaware install a decent Ant Virus app, AVG by Grisoft
has a free one.And visit MS Site and see their section on how to protect
your PC, install MS Defender, Adaware and SpyBot. The first runs in the
background the second two you have to manually run. All are free.
