Troubleshoot calendar appointments received as email

Folks,

Not from everyone, but some calendar appointments are received as email not
calendar appointments.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject.

Are they sent over Internet Servers? What message format do they arrive in?
It's possible they are being stripped by the servers they travel through.
