Trouble with Vista Prem. 64-bit?

I'd installed for a client and didn't realize that AVG Antivirus is a 32-bit
application and somehow or another it won't install, and won't open docx
files already created, and whenever he runs "World of War Craft" it crashes!

I suppose something in Windows is the issue. He said that his game suggested
it was memory, he ran a memory test & the RAM comes out fine. So, I am
thinking, since he can't uninstall AVG 32-bit, not even after doing a restore
point, could it be something within Windows itself? Does a clean installation
do it? Would that prevent the issue from crashing by reinstalling and trying
it again? Or could there be a hardware issue?

Please advise?!

I think I would advise the client first, but I will let that go.

a) Is word 2007 reinstalled? (for opening docx)
b) Just because he is having problems uninstalling AVG doesn't mean anything
wrong with Windows. Sometimes the uninstall even says it fails, but is
uninstalled on restart. I couldn't imagine why WWCraft is crashing. You
could reinstall the OS, but I would troubleshoot it further first. Doesn't
sound like a hardware issue to me. Also, AVG runs just fine on a 64bit
system. So do most 32 bit programs. Drivers, now that is another story.

Hi Gregg-

It's very interesting... AVG actually crashes and isn't fullying
installed... strange actually. But, yet it doesn't work I was thinking could
it be Windows might need to be reinstalled.

Here's what my customer said:
"I'll do a system restore in the morning... and ya.. the file is in the
documents folder on the harddrive.. dont know whats up there... anything I
type and save.. i cant view again
[10/10/2009 2:57:24 AM] MikeThomas333: when I try and delete the avg .. I
get this error:
[10/10/2009 2:57:29 AM] MikeThomas333: Local machine: installation failed
Initialization:
Warning: Avg text message exception.
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgwdsvc.exe: stopping service....
Error 0x8007041c
Warning: Preparation to unload of the service avg8wd failed.
Specified file was not found.
[10/10/2009 11:54:28 PM] MikeThomas333: ok.. restore point no good... same
as before... and docx is the same... I can see it.. just cant open it...
also... I'm getting a ton of crashing while in World of Warcraft... keeps
giving me a all sorts of error crud... I cant un-install AVG and im tired of
re-installing my game...windows is telling me it could be a mem prop.. run a
RAM scan... all good... no clue whats going on... about to pull, whats left
of, my hair out...lol"

He also claimed at an eariler instance that he created a word.docx file and
never could reopen it.

Confused about this, although never have installed 64-bit OS before and
wouldn't suspect it to be a serious issue. I think it does a memory dump as
well... could be wrong about that of course because I haven't confirm that
with the customer.

If we are to re-install do you think it would recitfy the issue?

A reinstall will rectify the issues if there are issues. I have found
that many times it is difficult to go on just what a customer says. As
I mentioned in my reply, if Office 2007 has not been reinstalled since
your installed for him then he will not have a program to open .docx
files. As for an AV, I have used AVG forever, but now I am leaning
toward Microsoft Security Essentials. It installs quick and is very
low impact on system resources. You could reinstall the OS if for no
other reason other than to pacify the customer. It sounds like the AVG
install just for some reason borked to me. I'd bet there is no issue
with the os installation.
