trouble with ICS connection - all info included

W

warecc

I have reviewed and implemented every suggestion, esp.
suggestions from Steve Winograd [MVP]to try to reach the
internet from the ICS client. I am able to connect the
client to the internet via dial-up but not thru the ICS
host. I have disabled and re enabled the host, still
can't connect. Dropped the host firewall, still couldn't
connect. Finally, after several days, received a messege
on MSN IM that said I "could not sign in because i was
behind a firewall that does not allow a direct connection
to the internet and tried to use an HTTP Proxy but IE
settings are either missing or incorrect. Adjust IE proxy
settings."

So i went into IE and since the LAN setttings were all
unchecked, i checked them all. After making that change i
got a "Unable to sign you in to ..NET Messenger service
possibly because of a problem with service (NOT, cause
works on dialup) or with your internet connection (duh).
I then dropped the firewall on the host and still
couldn't sign in.

Can ping the client from the host but cannot ping the
host machine from the client.

why does the client computer look like a host? [(ahhh the DSL router)
the actual host] I'd suggest statically assigning the host
*computer's* IP statically,
1. disabling the dhcp on the router

2. disable the WAN on the router and use it specifically as an Access
Point until you get your DSL. ICS has it's own DHCP services which can
and will be disabled if another dhcp server is running and vice versa
with the router, since DHCP broadcasts. this really has nothing to do
with the Internet service provider as long as it can support NAT in
some fashion; dial-up works fine with ICS.

3. make sure no PC's are connected to the WAN adapter

4. read carefully theres alot of info here

I'll edit the settings you displayed to make a little more sense in a
network scheme

Look on ware1's adapter setup you will find a default gateway opposing
the dial-ups gateway; it can work, however 9 times out of 10 you will
get a time-out before it finds the gateway on the PPP adapter
indications of this usually result in an outlook (express) err number
0x800CCC0E -- (tcp/ip screwy error)
Can ping the client from the host but cannot ping the
host machine from the client.

firewall Issue: the router could possibly stop ICMP traffic from
certain sources destinations however if you have ICF enabled on
\\wares1 this would cause the same thing.

Best thing to do if you have played with firewalls and IPsec settings,
before attempting to follow my directions disable all firewalls,
definately restore IE's settings to defaults%) no other settings are
needed with IE to use ICS
and make sure your IPsec settings haven't been altered too much on

Cannot connect to the internet when ICS host firewall is
enabled. With LAN connection but without firewall, O/S is
slower, browsing is slower, apps are slower. If I drop
the LAN connection, things run like they used to. What
could the problem be? Do I need to purchase a 3rd party
firewall or can i get ICF to work? This is a two PC lan
