Trouble with High CPU/RAM Usage.

I am trying to burn a DVD with Nero. The system requirements are RAM
of 256MB and Pentium 4 running at 1.4GH or more. I meet these
requirements. I would like to add more memory but cannot due to
complex circumstances in this Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop.
Right after my Nero timeline is laid out (first step) if I do a
preview of the video, the CPU usage goes to 100%, and everything
freezes.
I realize this computer is probably inadequate for this type of
work especially with such low memory, but is there anything I can do
with virtual memory or the cache to allow anything to be accomplished?
(I have played with virtual memory sizes to no avail.) I have tried to
make sure that there is as little else running as possble when I run
Nero.
Your help is very much appreciated!

What Nero version..? Are you using Nero InCd ver(#?), for DVD-RW media..?
What DVD media are you trying to burn to..?

Thanks for your reply. I am using Nerovision 3, latest version,
and attempting to burn a video DVD+R.
Update: I have more disc space freed up (6+ GB) and am
running "barebones" in order to maximize available RAM. MSconfig
is actually set to diagnostic mode and I have even gone so far as to
shut down EXPLORER. I have monitored my "performance" with
Task Manager while Nero is running, and although it indicates 100% CPU
usage at the bottom of the Window, there is always plenty of available
RAM. The commit charge never exceeds 225 MB or so. The CPU is a
Pentium 4 running at 1.69MH (min required: 1.5). I have the virtual
memory page size set very large (in the order of 2GB starting and
max). Also I have performance optimized for cache, not programs.
I have made some progress and now get to the burn stage before
freezing occurs. The project consists of 22 AVI clips with a total
running time of well less than 15 minutes. What is most frustrating
is that with repeated burns with exactly the same settings the freeze
starts at widely different points. Some times I'm less than a few
seconds into the first clip. but I've gotten as far as four. Watching
task manager, the freeze actually often occurs with higher available
RAM, so I don't think RAM is the issue.
I am beginning to think that Nero is the problem.
Any ideas?
Thank you again!
Frank

Frank,

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ an advanced analyzer tool, not a fix..
First check your AVI clips for truncation and whether you video & audio
codecs are working or need updating, see links below for the latest codecs..
http://www.divxmovies.com/software/
http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/
You also may want to join the AVI files, may help, your call..
I think this link should do the trick, though I have not tried it out yet
myself..

Have you tried burning to an ISO file on the HD, then to DVD..?
Also, have you used the Nero Infotool to check if the drive supports DVD+R..?
Updated the firmware for the optical drive..?
The file system is NTFS, right..?
Hope this can help, post your results..

With such a minimal specification on your computer you should avoid
doing *anything* else on the computer while the burn is in progress.
Do not try to do a preview. Do not launch Task Manager. Try going
for a long leisurely lunch and see what has happened when you get
back.

Good luck
