Hello;

I am ugrading from 98 SE to XP SP2. It started ok, but now I keep getting a
blue screen:

stop 0x00000050 page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

then the computer shuts down.

I tried the knowledge base, it said something about BootSkin ... which I
have never installed. Computer worked ok in 98 ... no conflicts.

Anything I can do? Thanks in advance.

What you should have done before attempting the upgrade was to determine
that your machine hardware and software was compatible with XP.. running the
XP CD in Win 98 gives you the option (#4 if memory serves me well) of
ascertaining this information.. you leave everything connected, printer,
scanner, etc such that XP can determine if it will support the devices..

Take a look at this website..

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_ccgm.asp

There are a number of reasons for the failure.. there could be software
installed that XP doesn't like.. there could be hardware installed or
connected that XP doesn't like.. it could be a combination of the two..

So where from here?.. Does your machine still boot to Windows 98?.. if any
screen appears that offers you that option, take it.. if not, read on..

Your best bet is to try to recover to a Win 98 installation.. XP obviously
doesn't like something about your system, and is unlikely to successfully
install regardless of what you try at this point.. use your Win 98 CD, be it
genuine or a vendor recovery set..

With Win 98 running ok, do what I suggested in the first paragraph.. run the
XP CD and choose option 4 to find out what XP doesn't like.. correct the
problem, and then try the upgrade again.. when running the upgrade, you
should disconnect all externally connected devices..
