Trouble Starting in SAFE Mode

Pressing F8 during the boot process brings up a window from my BIOS allowing selection of the boot device; Floppy, CD, or Hard
Drive. While this is convenient, what I really want to do is boot XP into Safe mode.

Is there another key combination that makes XP boot into Safe Mode? Right now I'm stuck with using MSConfig and reconfiguring the
system to boot into safe mode.

Sounds more like your BIOS has an option to hit F8 to alter the boot
drive sequence on-the-fly. You're hitting F8 way too early if the BIOS
is picking it up. You need to wait until you see something telling you
the operating system is loading since that's where you select to tell it
what mode to use.

I have the same sort of set up, choose HD and then start pressing F8 again
immediately. That works for me, hope it does for you.

Kaylene - Thanks for the advice. I believe you are correct about selecting the hard drive and continuing on. I'm probably hitting
the F8 key to early in the boot sequence.

Is there another key combination that brings up Safe mode? I seem to remember pressing F3 and holding down the control key worked
in Win 98 and I wondered if there were other key combinations that work in WinXP Home Edition. I searched through the Windows XP
help and could find no reference to Safe mode.

Hi Don, I've either used the F8 key or Msconfig.to boot to safe mode. Even in
Win98 I used the F8 key.
Perhaps you could try a google search on the subject and see what turns up.

Don, try F5. That was the function key that would go directly to the Safe
Mode GUI in previous versions of Windows. Have seen posts in these
newsgroups from folks that say it still works for them.

Or, if your BIOS beeps after "discovering" the floppy drive at the end of
POST, press F8 at that time.
