Trouble opening program over network

Hello all,

We are new to Win XP having just converted over from Win 98. We are
now experiencing many problems adjusting to the new XPisms. Today's
issue is the following:

We utilize a Credit Card processing software, which is installed on
two computers. Generally, this program is run from one machine, and
the data is actually written to another (the other machine on the
network contains both the program and data files, while the one which
generally runs the program contains only the program files -- make
sense?).

These steps were being carried out problem-free as long as the machine
with the data files was running Win98. Now, with XP on the data file
machine, we cannot get the program to load on the non-data-file
machine. It's as though the program cannot read the files it needs.

Now, I've been having perpetual difficulties with setting permissions
to all users for other commonly used files, like our Access database
for example. I'll set permissions so that all users can view and/or
modify the file, but next time I boot my machine, no one else can view
or modify the file. Thus, I'm constantly resetting permissions in XP.
Why is that?

When I try to open a file on a remote machine before resetting
permissions in this way, the message I get indicates that the file
can't be found, not that it's protected. I'm guessing that something
similar is affecting the data files needed to run this program?

Any and all advice much appreciated,

Dave Ingram

Your guess is probably correct as older programs weren't designed to be
run under a true multi-user operating system. However, your best bet is
to contact the program's tech support for precise information.
