Trouble openig Office 97 Programs after downloading latest W2000 service pack and security patches.

About one month ago I downloaded all of the security patches and latest service pack for Windows 2000 from the Microsoft web site. The download included all of the files recommended by Microsoft following it's on-line analysis of my existing Windows 2000 configuration. In all, more than 19 megabytes were downloaded. After the download I noticed serious problems opening Outlook Mail, Excel spreadsheets and Word docs. For example, it takes more than five minutes to open Outlook, regardless of whether I'm on-line or not (I access the internet the old fashioned way- by telephone modem)

I am also unable to pull up Excel spreadsheets from my hard drive. After a wait of secveral minutes, a screen pops up telling me that Excel is unable to find the document. This, despite having the file clearly displayed in the proper Windows Explorer sub-directory

Can anyone help

Have you tried running the Office97 applications using compatibility mode?

Do you see anything that looks relevant in your application & system event
logs? I haven't used Office97 in a bazillion years, but I don't think it
should be a problem....

You may want to try re-registering Word/Excel.

With the apps closed;

(No quotes and mind the space before the "/" in all commands).

Excel;
Windows Start Button|Run
"excel /unregserver"
Windows Start button|Run
"excel /regserver"

Word;
Windows Start Button|Run
"winword.exe /r"
