I formated my Dell Inspiron 7000 (was win98se) and created a directory
called i386. Then copied the i386 folder from the xp xd to it. Then ran
the winnt file to setup and install xp. During the install, some files
could not be copied (oembios.bin, cyclom.inf and a few other files).
During the setup, the splash screen shows 34 minutes remaining then the
computer goes into a sleep mode and will not awaken. I have to turn the
power off then back on again. The setup again goes to the same point and
then sleeps again.

Is this a hard ware issue, like the hard drive being defective or is it from
the missing files?

thank you all for comments and suggestions

Hi

Do you get the same problem if you install from the CD as opposed to installing from the hard disk? How did you copy the contents of the XP CD on to your hard disk? I've found that the complete contents - including the root folder - of the XP CD has to be copied onto the hard disk.

Yes, usually when you get the error message that some files could not be
copied, there is a hardware failure. Do a RAM test and a hard drive
test.

That winnt is for running after booting an outside DOS (the win98
startup floppy). INstead, copy the setup.exe and other files from the
root of the CD to be outside the i386, and run that from your Win98
system

I just finished the same ungrade from Win98se to xp and had the same
problem. The messages here in google groups gave me the answer. You
need to change a BIOS setting. Immediately on power up push F2 to get
into the BIOS setup. Find the video settings and change it to LCD
(only). Otherwise during XP install, it looks for a second,
non-existent monitor and hangs. Be sure to save the new setting.
There are other suggested BIOS settings in the various posts: one
suggests to reset to defaults (except above), another refers to power
saving settings. I also suggest you work from a clean install of Win
98: Backup all your files and data (emails and addresses, favorites)(I
know you did this before you started, right?), make a startup disk,
reformat your hard drive, reinstall Win98. (Don't even try to install
XP without Win98 from DOS, it'll take hours to copy the files.) I'll
make a more general posting in a few days with other suggestions, like
converting from FAT32 to NTFS, etc. It's a lot of work, but it assures
you the junk on the registry is gone and all the useless stuff is
deleted. It's also a good time to get rid of unnecessary programs and
files.
Good Luck.
