trouble installing BCM

Guest

I have MS Office Professional Edition 2003 running on Windows XP and have
installed Business Contact Manager.

After installing BCM I clicked on Data File Management to set up the BCM
database and Outlook crashed. I could not get Outlook to open after that at
all until I used System Restore to restore my computer to a restore point a
few days earlier.

BTW I could open another Outlook profile, just not the one where I had
attempted to install BCM.

I would still like to be able to use BCM. Does anyone out there have any
suggestions?

I've noticed that most items on the MS site refer to using the following
servers with BCM.

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
hosted Exchange Server 2003

I simply have a POP3 setup Internet connection. Is it a pipe-dream for me to
try and use BCM? I'm ready to download updates for BCM but since they all
refer to using these servers I'm afraid these updates won't help and MS being
the creature that it is I'm even more afraid that these updates will mess up
Outlook.

Generally, BCM works better with POP3. At least there are fewer
failure points than with an Exchange account.

I would recommend not running Outlook when running BCM setup.

If the problem is limited to a specific mail profile, then you can try
removing BCM from the profile (Control Panel|Mail|Profiles, select the
profile,|Properties|Data files). Run Outlook with that profile to make
sure everythin's ok. And then back to control panel to add BCM to that
profile.

Thank you for your detailed reply Luther. I have a couple of questions though.

1. The MS site says that to remove BCM you have to edit the registry which
is fine except that their instructions all refer to using an MS Exchange
Server so I'm not sure how to completely remove BCM when I'm not using an MS
Exchange server.

2. I would like to download the BCM update but again the update refers to
using one of 3 servers and since I'm not using those would the update be
helpful for my setup?

I tried following your instructions to remove BCM from the one profile that
its attached to but didn't see any way that I could remove BCM from that
profile thru the Control Panel/Mail. Is there a step I'm missing?

Also I don't know how to install BCM thru the Control Panel instead of using
the install disk. If I remember right I think the install disk directs me to
have Outlook open to install BCM.

Hi Kathleane,

I believe the version of BCM that you have installed is called
"Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003", if this is correct, then
it is generally recommanded for you to get the "Business Contact
Manager for Outlook 2003 *Update*", as it contains some critical bug-
fixes/updates that MS released after the initial release of BCM 2003.

Luther, I believe Kathleane is having trouble even getting BCM into
her Outlook profile, therefore she shouldn't even expect to have BCM
in the Mail Data Store, and that's why she is curious for why she
doesn't find it there.
