Trouble downloading Updates for AVG

T

Topper

For a while now Ive not been able to download updates for this program. I
consistently get the message:

An automatic connection to the internet could not be established. Please
establish manually.

I have checked my internet connection and there is nothing wrong with it. I
have turned off zonealarm, and other applications i thought might have got
in the way but still nothing.

Has anyone else had this problem, I am running xp and have also been having
trouble sending email with outlook express lately with all my accounts
except my ISP account although no problem receiving even though ive double
checked the settings.

Which makes me think something is running on my comp which i dont know
about. Hence the need for AVG which wont update.

I am sure no expert , have you considered getting an online virus scan ?
Panda seems OK , just go here

The problem probably isn't on your end, it's AVG's problem. The location
where updates come from has changed, and your copy is pointing to the old
one. Uninstall completely, and get the newest version, and that should
solve the problem.

FWIW, I jetisoned AVG and switched to Avast, for that reason.

I have been a long time user of AVG. I finally got fed up with the
download situation and installed AVAST. This program is much better
than AVG, especially for email. Right after I got it installed I
checked email and it found a worm. I deleted the email before I opened
it. AVG can not do this. Before you install AVG again, try AVAST.

as it happens, see the thread below about this problem.

having installed a new router, i thought it was that causing problems but i
d/l'd a new version of AVG yesterday and did a fresh install with it and
still cant update. i also got a new version today on the networked pc, had
trouble installing (could be me... not sure) but eventually did, and still
cant get updates.

as a further point, it took ages to find the site after i said i'd like to
download it. so, yes, maybe its not me after all.

i think i will try AVAST... just to see.

Quoting from a recent British PC magazine on this matter:

"It is possible to download updates from the AVG web site. Right-click
on the AVG icon in the System Tray and click on Run AVG Control
Center. Click on the Information tab and look for the Program version
number. Make a note of the last three digits. Open your Internet
browser and go to http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe This
page holds the different updates available for AVG. Each update has
details of what version number it will upgrade from. Look for the
Update number that has a minimum required version that matches yours
and click on the update file to download it. When asked where to save
it, select the update folder for AVG, which should be C:\Program
Files\Grisoft\AVG\Update. When the file has finished downloading,
right-click on the AVG icon in the System Tray and click on Run AVG
Anti-Virus. The updates will now be installed".

Use AVG myself but am not really having the difficulties, touch wood,
reported in this NG, so haven't needed to update definitions by this
method. Looks to be straight forward though. If you have installed AVG
on your PC other than where stated above remember to install
definitions there. Perhaps if anyone succeeds with this they can say
how it went.

Edit the URL.INI in the Grisoft folder thus :

[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com 1
4=www.grisoft.com 2

[SERVER_URL]

3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
4=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=4

and updates should be OK again.

I updated my URL.INI and I was able to finally download. Had to check the
servers one by one until I finally got one to connect. Thanks

The servers are busy. AVG updates obviously have very little
bandwidth devoted to them. Yesterday, an attempt at a manual
download from their site could not even provide an update. I
did get an auto update at 3:30 a.m. today as I got up a little
earlier than usual. :)

Glad I found this newsfroup. I'd thought my AVG files were corrupted
because I've been having update probs for weeks,

I Guess its time to check out other AV solutions. Avast is looking
better now.

I've just changed to xp and having installed the free version of AVG had the
same problem with update. I followed instructions you've quoted and it
worked a treat. Thanks very much.
