Trouble converting Word doc w/jpegs to PDF

I edit manuscripts for several independent publishers and then convert them
to PDF in order to send them to the printer. We've had several four-color
books, i.e. with color photographs of various sizes, basically thumbnails,
that suddenly disappear when I do the convert procedure. I've upgrated to
Adobe 8 Standards and that did not solve the problem. I made a test page in
word containing only the jpeg and the conversion produced a blank page. BUT,
when I went to "My Pictures" and pulled up the original 8X10 jpg, it
converted instantly.

I am pulling my hair out over this. The book was supposed to have gone to
the printer last week. Any help would be gratefully received.

What happens if you set Adobe PDF as the active printer driver. Does the
illustration show in Print Preview?
If not, check your Adobe settings.

Thank you Graham. I haven't been able to personally try your suggestions
because my son "cleaned up" my computer this morning and now I have no
printers at all AND my Acrobat 8 took a trip somewhere. Believe it or not,
he's the CIO at a big company in D.C. However, I got the same suggestion you
gave me from an outside source, so I'm pretty confident that's going to solve
my problem.
