how do you convert a word doc. to pdf. file?

With Windows XP and Word 2002 I have a book manuscript in a word. doc. The
printing company wants a pdf. file. Without a "converter program" is it
possible to do this? And what exactly does a converter program mean?

No, you need a converter program. This means that you need to install
another program, such as Acrobat (not the free Reader) to convert the file.

Although I use Acrobat, I've often recommended PrimoPDF (www.primopdf.com)
as an alternative.
