On closing I am invited to compact the message database. The message that
"Windows Mail or another program is using the folder" always appears.
I use Trendmicro PC-cillin for virus protection.
Is there a solution to this?

As a test, uninstall your antivirus, reboot, then try Windows Mail again.
Let us know the results.

Thanks. I haven't uninstalled the anti virus program but have closed it down temporarily with no positive result. I'm reluctant to go through the uninstall reinstall process unless I really have to.
How do I initiate the compacting process from within the program by the way?

Close down the program. When it offers to compact the database,
tell it to do it.

I have now tried going to the windows mail folder, properties, advanced, and clicking the compact data base box then apply etc etc with no discernible result. Think I'll just put up with the problem for the moment. Thanks for the advice so far.
