Trouble booting after win2k install

I recently bought a new 30GB HDD for an older PII350
machine. Ran fdisk to make a 4GB FAT32 partition and
installed Win98. Need to have both 2kPro and 98. SO I pop
in my 2kPro disk and run setup, have it setup a new
partition on the remaining 26GB and everything goes fine
until the final reboot.
Error reads: "Win2k could not start cuz the following
file is missing or corrupt: <windows 2000 root>\system32
\ntoskernl.exe. Please reinstall a copy of the file."
With some quick finger work I can get it to start in 98
and check the file. It seems fine. I try to copy it from
the win2kPro disk, but it's got an ex_ extension.
Does anyone have a clue on this? I've never had trouble
like this before.
Thanks,
Glenno

Thank you for replying so quickly Dave.

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft
Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

That's it. Looks pretty simple, but I admit I don't
understand it. The partition(2) bit looks suspicious.

Thanks again.

Glenn

I don't see a problem here. This is pointing to the second partition on
drive0 to the \winnt directory. If this is correct, then it's possible
ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt.

You can replace the file from the recovery console

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

From a command prompt
expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ %windir%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Since it's a new install, I would be inclined to delete the logical drive in
the extended partition and start the install over.
