My infection took the guise of dx8compat.exe. I followed
the instructions of Symantics and then tried to regedit
delete those entries that were not dealt with by using
their removal tool. The most recent action was to delete
the "My
Computer\HEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Uninstall\dx8compat". I am now stuck in Safe
Mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG Go to the BOOT.INI tab and make sure the /SAFEBOOT option is unchecked.
