Trojan.Abwiz.F

Good afternoon, the following is a problem I am having trouble with:
(I am running W2000)
When I last did my Nortons update I got the following message-

"The following updates have been aborted:
Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions has 1 aborted update(s). Reason: LU1875:
This update failed during its preprocessing welcome text phase."

Nortons provided a downloadable tool called Trojan.Abwiz removal tool which
has to be run in safe mode. Did this. Then when tool finished its run it
provided a message : 'did not find Trojan.Abwiz on your computer.' Ran
removal tool 2nd time, same message rec'd. ('did not find Trojan.Abwiz on
your computer.')
Tried live update again & got the original message i.e. "The following
updates have been aborted:
Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions has 1 aborted update(s). Reason: LU1875:
This update failed during its preprocessing welcome text phase."
Thus not able to now keep virus definitions up to date.
Considering to uninstall Nortons and then re-install. But concerned that
this itself may fail i.e. that the uninstall may not actually remove all
components of Nortons. Many thanks any help, much appreciate.

Hi white

I can't help with the eradication of the virus.
Nortons provided a downloadable tool called Trojan.Abwiz removal tool which
has to be run in safe mode. Did this. Then when tool finished its run it

Considering to uninstall Nortons and then re-install. But concerned that
this itself may fail i.e. that the uninstall may not actually remove all

I can advise you to backup your data before you attempt the uninstall.

trojan.abwiz is just one of the possible reasons you could be receiving
that error... have you tried using the intelligent updater to get your
updates (http://tinyurl.com/kxjkp)?

Hi! I too have had the exact same experience, and I believe that what
ius really going on here is that the error message is nothing more than
Syamntec's way of making you upgrade thier product. There is really no
virus. In my case they say that my version (2004) is no long supported,
even though I have a service contract with Symantec, they want another
$70 to upgrade. BTW, This software was bundled with a new DEll computer
that is just a year old. Thanks to Dell for packing a product at the
end of it's life cycle, but that is another story. So in the end tis is
just a way to drive sales for Symantec. If anone else can dispute this
and actually find a virus on my computer or White's, please help.

hmmm... well, you could try to rule out the possibility of it being
trojan.abwiz.f by hand...

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.abwiz.f.html indicates
that the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
should contain an entry for taskdir.exe however you may only be able to
see it after booting in safe-mode...

assuming you have been booting into safe-mode properly (some people
neglect that part, not knowing how and not realizing how important it
is) you should be able to verify or rule out the presence of
trojan.abwiz.f...

I have exactly the same problem. I've checked
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run as well
as a few other indicators and I believe that my machine does not have
the trojan.

I'll unistall Norton AV if I don't hear a solution from Symantec.
Aren't they too big for such little games?!

Regards,
Bulent

Hi Bulent, interesting to see your comment, would be interested to know
if you are able to complete downloading your virus update definitions, as
this is how Norton's has left me, just hanging with no ability to update &
so no protection & scared to uninstall as I've heard it can be so much
drama.

Un-install Norton as it is a HUGELY BLOATED application that is getting
BIGGER all the time.
NOD32 or AVG FREE are MUCH better.

Go to Start then Run then enter regedit to start the registry editor then go
to Edit and do a Find on Norton then delete the key.
Depress the F3 key (Repeat Find) and delete the MANY entries that are left
over from the un-install.
Go back to the top of the registry and repeat for Symantec.
