Trillian Question

On the Rx of the pricelessware list I installed Trillian free for my
daughter and set her up with an AIM account. I have a question about the
privacy settings. Under "Who can contact me" I checked the box for "Allow
only the users below" and entered in her friends on the Allow list.

So how is it that friends (and her sister) who know her handle but have not
yet been added to the allow list are able to send her messages? How does the
privacy setting relate to the DirectIM settings (and is there something as
indirect IM?)

No, they cannot contact her. Only the people in the Whitelist can
contact her.

Perhaps it would be easier to allow contact from all people on the
contact list, because it is easier to add people to the contact list
than to the whitelist.

The DirectIM means that you are contacted directly, otherwise, you are
connected via the AOL-AIM-Server. With Direct IM, your chat partner gets
your IP-adress, with indirect IM, all the messages could theoretically
be used by AOL what might allow them to show personalised ads.

Unfortunately that is NOT what happened. She was busy chatting with friends
and a message from her sister popped up. It was not an invitation, but the
actual text from her sister. Now, that was OK, but it could have been
*anyone* that had gotten her handle somewhere. Are you saying that the
"Block all users" setting in the privacy configuration is superceded by the
contact list?

That should not be the case. If it is, that would be clearly a mistake
in the program. Perhaps you should check the configuration again, to
make sure you did not made a mistake, and if everything seems right take
a look at the Trillian forum. They should have a FAQ how to archive this
things.

I am not that familiar with the privacy settings, because I hardly ever
needed them, so I cannot give you much advise on this. :(
