Trial versions of MS software require to buy programs just to extract?

I downloaded 90-day trial version of Visual Studio 2005 but this
thing
is only in .img file format
and Microsoft does not provide any extraction utility for .img files.
According to this page (related to another software with at least
alternative.iso format)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/

you have to use 3rd party programs, and the ones listed are not free
and charge min $30.
Is it some kind of scam?!

IsoBuster is free for extracting the contents of an image file. There are
other free options as well if you want to burn an image to CD. One no fuss
easy option is BurnCDCC from http://www.bootitng.com/utilities.html. You
can also use free utilities such as daemon tools for Alcohol 52% that will
allow you to mount the image file in a virtual CD/DVD drive to do the
install. So plenty of free options available.

Change the .img extension to .iso You can then either burn a CD /DVD or use
the free VCDControl tool to mount the ISO as a new Drive letter.

The website for IsoBuster does not list any free version, you can
download it for free
but when you actually want to extract the image it wants you to pay
first.

I want to use only programs listed oficially on Microsoft site. I will
not run anything else on my PC.

Good luck with that then. You want it free and Microsoft?

Not sure if it's free but it is part of the server resource kit - so you may
have to "technically" own a server licence.

Then that is a change as previous versions of IsoBuster would extract using
the free functionality.

You mean you run absolutely nothing on your PC unless Microsoft officially
lists it on their website? I'm amazed you can get anything done.

Based on your attitude I'm not sure why I'm continuing, but

Maybe a call or email to Microsoft would be in order then.

I don't know why you want to only run MS software, but the other
suggestions here are very good solutions. I have used most of them with
very good results.

This is the oddest thing. That troll AaronKempf posted an almost-identical
method in the VB ng a week or so ago. So maybe this is a new alias for him?

When I read the original post, that is the first thing that popped
into my mind. Thank you for pointing that out.
