TREO 650 and email question

Guest

I've looked over all of these posts and not found the answers to my questions
either that, or I'm just not understanding the experienced computer lingo - I
would appreciate any help you could offer.

1. Is it possible to use Microsoft Access with my TREO 650?? And how user
friendly is it? Can I also program it to send and receive emails from Access
on the TREO?

2. Is it possible to send and receive emails directly from my new database
in Access? Also, is it possible to program it to keep copies of all of my
correspondence with each client/contact??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Charlie,
1. Is it possible to use Microsoft Access with my TREO 650??
No. While a TREO 650 can apparently run utilities for viewing Word, Excel
and PowerPoint according to this link:

http://web.palm.com/products/smartp...tml?KWOPT-no_popup-PALMONE.1.1000.client=true

I'm fairly certain it cannot run MS Access because it is not running the
Windows operating system.
2. Is it possible to send and receive emails directly from my new database
in Access? Also, is it possible to program it to keep copies of all of my
correspondence with each client/contact??

Yes, it is possible to send e-mail from Access. You can also read received
e-mail by using automation to tie into Outlook. However, building this
capability into an Access project is not necessarily something a beginner
should attempt. I have seen a demonstration of an Access application that
included this functionality. If you are really interested in pursuing this,
send me a private e-mail, and I will attempt to put you in contact with the
developer of this application.

Access is a software written to work with MSWindows (2k/XP) and although I've
searched I still don't know if your TREO uses either the Symbian or Windows
CE operating system.

There are alternative software programs that possibly work with your TREO.

Search the web for SprintDB, Data on the Run, or the easier approach of
XSForms from www.grandasoft.com

Hi Doug - thank you for you're quick reply!! So, just to clarify:

Yes, I can take my Access database on the road with me thru my TREO if I use
one of these programs??? (ie: Data-on-the-go) I just want to be sure,
before I go to the trouble of building a database only to find out that I can
only use it on my home computer.

Hi Tom,
Thank you for replying to my question. Just one more question if you
wouldn't mind. You have said that I can join up my Outlook Express with
Access (but it is very difficult) - can I hold off on doing this until I have
my database up and running, or is this something that I have to do right
away? Also, if I am able to take Outlook express with me on my Treo -
wouldn't it then also transfer to my Access database automatically?

Hi Charlie,

I said that you can use automation with Outlook, not Outlook Express. You
would have to switch to using Outlook as your e-mail client first, since it
has a programmable object model. Outlook Express does not offer this
capability.

My apologies, I'm trying to reply to 3 people at the same time and getting a
little confused. I was sent to the following link with someone else who
replied to my question and if you scroll halfway down the page, it says
something about "Taking your Access Data with you" - any comments??

Hi Jose,
Thank you for replying. I have I believe 3 conversations going at once
right now, so I apologize in advance if there is any confusion in my
responses. I can't believe 3 different people are attempting to help me out
- usually you go to a discussion forum and it could be days before 1 person
responds - so thank you to all of you.

Sorry Jose... I figured I would get that out before I replied to your post.
That "Data on the Run" that you are talking about, so that will enable me to
use my Access database on my Treo???

Hi Charlie,

I suspect that this is transferring a JET database, not an Access
application. When you use Access, the default database engine is JET. I'm
going to guess that any forms and reports that you created in a desktop
Access application would not be available on the TREO. Based on the link you
provided, it looks like any data in the tables would be available.

Technically speaking, there is no such thing as an "Access database", even
though it is quite common to use such terminology. There are Access
applications, which may or may not use the JET database to store the data.
The Windows CE Operating system likely includes the JET database engine.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you had, Tom.

You'd written "I'm fairly certain it cannot run MS Access because it is not
running the Windows operating system", and I wanted readers to know while
the operating system Pocket PCs run is called Windows Mobile, that's not
good enough to run Access.

I'd make sure that the TREO 650 is mentioned as compatible whatever product
you land on. Check their websites.

The Pendragon site explicitly mentions the TREO 650.

Data-on-the-Run appears only to work with Pocket PCs.

HanDBase mentions both Palm and Pocket PC operating systems, but doesn't
mention specific models.

I didn't bother checking the rest.

Hi again Tom,
I don't suppose you can have a look at a question I've posted in the Outlook
discussion under New?? Basically, I am trying to figure out what to use,
either Outlook, Access, or a combination of both (if this is possible)

Sorry Jose... I figured I would get that out before I replied to your

You should be aware of the difference between the data, and the user
interface (UI).

It is quite easy to take a table of data from ms-access, and simply throw it
into a excel sheet.

You can then use one of many systems for palm based Treo to read a Excel
sheet. In fact, the unit ships with documents to go, and thus does allow you
to read the excel sheet.

So, a workable approach here is to put the data into Excel..and then use
documents to go to the read/view the data on the Palm Treo as as a Excel
sheet.

So, just put your data in a Excel sheet..and that should do the trick.

If for some reason you need to have some "forms" and additional abilities on
the Treo, then you will have to purchase a database system for the Treo that
can pull data from ms-access. Pendragon Forms is a good package, and one
that has good integration with ms-access. It will allow you to build little
forms for your palm based unit..and those forms can be filled with data from
a table in ms-access (and sync both ways if you need).

There is a free trail on Pendragon site...and you could play with it for a
while. So, if you don't want to use the easy Excel idea, and want to "learn"
a new system to build forms etc, then Pendragon seems the way to go...

http://www.pendragon-software.com/

They have versions for both the windows mobile, and your case of the palm
based OS...

The only "slight" feature missing in pendragion is no support for the larger
palm os screens (lifedrve, T5, T3 etc. with hi-res screens).

however, your Treo is only low res screen, and so pendragon is perfect for
that....

Hi Charlie,

I just read the question you posted, along with the answer provided by
Outlook MVP Diane Poremsky. You can certainly keep contact information in an
Access application, and even use automation code to add tasks and
appointments to Outlook from Access. However, I'm just not too sure of how
you need to proceed when you add your mobile device, the TREO 650, into the
equation.

Here is an article on MSDN that you might find helpful:
