Transparent Chart from Excel?

Q

Quin

I like the "Transparent / 3D Effect that I get when I insert a PowerPoint
Chart using the default Microsoft Graph program that comes with PowerPoint.
Is there a way to apply that cool look to a graph imported or pasted from
Excel?

I have tried importing Excel Data into Microsoft Graph but that seems to
mess up the way the data is grouped in the chart. Also if I try to set a
transparent color the control is dimmed.

Any Ideas?

What "transparent / 3d effect" are you referring to?

I guess my question is, what's the problem with graphs pasted in from Excel
now?

What version of PPT are you using?

Echo S,
Thanks for the reply...

I guess a picture is worth a thousand words so I uploaded an example of the
same data. The first page of the PPS file is an example Powerpoint page
using Microsoft Graph, the graph program that comes with Powerpoint. The
second page is an example of the same data from an Excel file pasted in the
PPS file.

The graph on page one looks great. The graph on page 2 looks pretty bad.

I want my semi complicated charts from Excel to look as good as the ones
produced in Microsoft Graph.

Here is the link to the "Example" file. I will leave it posted until at
least July 2008

Ah, okay, now I have a better idea of what you mean.

For the 3D part, you have to do that in Excel. Right-click the chart in
Excel, choose Chart Type, then 3D. Or choose that chart type at the
beginning of the chart wizard when you create the chart in Excel.

For the coloring, I'd just let it do its thing automatically and then
recolor it in PPT using the steps explained here (see #1):
http://www.echosvoice.com/charts.htm

You'll also want to make sure to turn off font autoscaling in Excel and set
the font to the size it should be in PPT. Then make the chart 100% x 100%
size after you paste it into PPT. Most of that is disussed lower on that
page as well.

Many people find they have better luck getting charts sized properly if they
create the charts on their own chart sheets in Excel and then set the
chartsheet view to 100% before copying/pasting.

I took a look at the web site you suggested. I did not try it yet, but it
appears that there are instructions to "re-color" parts of the graph. For
sure this would be an improvement, but I believe I will not end up with the
transparent effect that looks so nice in MS graph. Maybe it is not possible
to adjust an Excel Chart for transparency after it is pasted into Powerpoint?

Your other suggestions concerning 3D, Font Size etc are very helpful.

You can double-click or right-click and select the chart and plot area in
Excel and select "no color" to get the transparency. Then use the recolor
part to make the chart match your slide.
