Transparency scan wider than 4 in. with Epson 3200?

I'm hoping someone out there can help me out here. I recently picked
up an open box deal on an Epson 3200 photo for $99 and really love it
so far.
What I would like to do now is use the scanner for doing digital
contact sheets and/or scanning multiple 6x6 negs at one time. I would
like to build a custom light source to give me full illumination over
an 8x10 area. This doesn't seem to be too much problem.
The problem lies in getting the scanner and/or software to allow me to
scan a strip wider than 4 inches while in transparency mode. Neither
EpsonScan nor Vuescan seems to allow this.
An email to Ed Hamrick is as of yet unanswered but I'm hoping he has a
solution with VueScan.
Has anyone else encountered this and solved it or is it just a stupid
hardware limitation? Mind you I won't be too upset if it can't be
done, but it sure would be nice it the scanner weren't crippled as it
appears to be.

Similar questions have been asked before and I am not aware posts in regard
to hidden tricks that will let you scan any wider in transparency mode with
EpsonScan, Vuescan, or Silverfast. Even if you wrote your own scanner
interface software, I don't know if you could scan wider.
