Translation of reading level (not language)

I know this may sound silly, but is there a way to translate a document into
a 6th grade reading level? This question was posed to my group, and we're
not sure if it's a built-in function of Word or some sort of plug-in.

No, there isn't anything built into Word. I'm not aware of any other
product that does it, although Google may turn up something in the
education community.

Personally, I doubt the ability of any program to edit (not
"translate") text to a specific reading level without turning it into
pure nonsense.
