Transition Help

I've set up my movie using JPEG photos and then adding music to go a long
with the photos but when I added transitions the photos no longer match the
music placement. The photos became much shorter in length. Why is this?
What can I do to fix this?

Transitions result in the two adjacent clips overlapping a bit.... to the
extent that they do, the overlap amount decreases the overall duration of
the video... but doesn't change the music.
